With Trump as president, it’s easy to get caught up in the doom and gloom political climate. The nuclear codes are in the hands of a reality television star. The economy is in a precarious state. And Trump and Pence are working to suppress voter rights in every state across the country. With GOP in power, they are chipping away at American’s right to choose when it comes to abortion. Trump promised that when Supreme Court Justice Kennedy retires, he’ll replace him with someone guaranteed to think abortion is a sin to revoke Roe v. Wade. But when it comes to your reproductive rights, some states are fighting back for the betterment of us all.
On Wednesday, the day after Independence Day, Oregon’s Senate passed a bill that requires every insurer to cover a wide range of abortion services. This means birth control would be accessible and so would abortions. Now patients would have to pay zero cost for these vital services.
The “Reproductive Health Equity Act of 2017” or House Bill 3391 extends insurance coverage for reproductive health services to undocumented immigrants too. It makes abortion legal in Oregon. Even if Trump overturns Roe v. Wade, the State of Oregon can still conduct the vital reproductive health service of the abortion.
Although the bill concedes that Christian insurance companies and others who do not believe in reproductive health care do not have to provide the service – but the state of Oregon will step in and help people who still need it.
“As states across the country are stripping women of reproductive health services and coverage, Oregon is leading the way in not only protecting the right to legal abortion but in expanding coverage to ensure that no one is denied access to vital reproductive health services, from contraception to postpartum care,” Grayson Dempsey, executive director of the advocacy group NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon said in a press release on Wednesday.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown is expected to sign the bill. Then Oregon will become the first state to guarantee abortion coverage to no cost for the patient. This will be a major win in the fight for reproductive rights in America.
California has a similar law requiring its individual and small group markets to cover abortion, but theirs isn’t as extensive as Oregon’s will be.
Massachusetts requires insurance companies to cover abortion when there is a medical need and New York is trying to get insurers to do it one step at a time.
While there is progress in the Blue states of America, the ACLU warns that 11 states already prohibit insurers from covering abortions in their policies. The only case they would allow is if the pregnancy was a result of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger.
Meanwhile, Mike Pence continues to rage against Planned Parenthood and works to take reproductive rights away from American women.
Do you think more states should fight for abortion and birth control?
