Election Expert: A GOP-Controlled Gov’t Is “No Longer A Functioning Democracy.”

Updated January 8, 2018

A top study has confirmed that a Republican-controlled government is “no longer a functioning democracy.” This fact is terrifying for those who do not abide by the GOP agenda. And because the GOP agenda only benefits the top one percent of income earners in America, most people should be terrified about this breaking news. Because most Americans take it for granted that the United States is supposed to be a democracy, we forget to ensure our rights that way.

Most people know that the popular vote for the president does not truly make America a democracy as the Electoral College is what actually chooses who sits in the Oval Office – if it were the other way around we’d be saying, President Hillary Clinton. Nevertheless, we assume that our government represents the people of the nation.

A piece published in the Raleigh, North Carolina publication called The News & Observer has unveiled a terrifying premise. What if our country is no longer a real Democracy?

While the article focused on the residents of North Carolina, the ideas behind it can apply to Americans in all fifty states.

The author of the article is Andrew Reynolds. He has helped organize elections amid turmoil in various countries around the world including Afghanistan, Egypt, Burma, Lebanon, Sudan, Yemen, and South Africa. And in the article, he shares the comprehensive analysis he and his team have used to ensure election quality in any situation.

Reynolds and his Danish counterpart Jorgen Elklit collaborated with Pippa Norris from Harvard University. Their system forms the foundation for the Electoral Integrity Project or EIP.

Their system has analyzed 213 elections in 153 countries. And it is masterful at “evaluating how free and fair and democratic elections are across time and place.”

Because Reynolds is a native of North Carolina, he wants his home state to be protected in light of what he is noticing as he runs his analyses of American elections. He put North Carolina’s elections to the test and found that his home state could “no longer considered to be a fully functioning democracy.”

North Carolina and all other states should heed Reynolds’ warning. And as you’ll see, the results are even more troubling than they seem on the surface:

“In the just-released EIP report, North Carolina’s overall electoral integrity score of 58/100 for the 2016 election places us alongside authoritarian states and pseudo-democracies like Cuba, Indonesia, and Sierra Leone. If it were a nation state, North Carolina would rank right in the middle of the global league table – a deeply flawed, partly free democracy that is only slightly ahead of the failed democracies that constitutes much of the developing world.”

Now if that doesn’t terrify North Carolina and all other Americans, this will:

“Indeed, North Carolina does so poorly on the measures of legal framework and voter registration that on those indicators we rank alongside Iran and Venezuela.”

Reynolds then dropped the bomb on American “democracy.”

“North Carolina is not only the worst state in the USA for unfair districting but the worst entity in the world ever analyzed by the Electoral Integrity Project.”
